She rented out her farmland and moved into Streeter with her youngest daughter in 1988. She re-entered the job market after taking courses to learn to type, use a computer, and do bookwork. She greatly enjoyed her work at the Gackle Senior Center assisting with activities and providing rides for medical appointments.

They moved to Harvey in 1951 where their children Bonnie and Ronald “Ron” were born. She returned to work at JC Penney Co in Harvey where she worked in the office for almost 22 years. Thank you to the staff at the Napoleon Care Center for providing such excellent care to Vangie.

Van was an active member of the First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for over 30 years. Every December for over 60 years, Van organized an event to take Christmas goodies to homebound members of the community. She was a welcoming and generous neighbor and enjoyed convincing anyone coming into her home to enjoy a sweet treat and conversation. She was very active in her family’s lives and will be greatly missed by her children and grandchildren.

On August 26, 1951, she married Orville Ketterling and joined him on the Ketterling family farm 10 miles south of Streeter which had been homesteaded by Orville’s grandfather in 1891.
